Found a weird old trick for lifting water stains from a tabletop
I was working on a 1920s oak table from a house in Boise, and it had a bad ring from a wet plant pot. An old timer at the supply store told me to try a paste of salt and olive oil, not mineral spirits. I left it on for about 20 minutes and gently rubbed with a cloth. It lifted the stain without hurting the original finish underneath. Has anyone else found a kitchen item that actually works on old wood?

Wait, is a water stain on a table really that big of a deal? It's just a mark from living with stuff. My whole coffee table is covered in cup rings and dings from my dog. It gives it character, you know? I feel like people stress too much about keeping old wood looking brand new. It's survived a hundred years, a little stain is part of its story.
