Switched from premixed spackle to hot mud for drywall patches

I used to use the lightweight premixed spackle in a tub for all my drywall repairs around the house, but it always took forever to dry and would shrink in bigger holes. A couple months ago I tried a 45-minute hot mud for a 3-foot crack in my hallway and that stuff cures hard as a rock with no shrinkage. Has anybody else made the switch and noticed a big difference in how long the repair holds up?

Swap to the 45 minute stuff and never looked back. The premixed stuff is fine for small nail holes but anything bigger and you're just wasting time waiting for it to dry. Hot mud cures chemically so no waiting around. Did you notice how much harder it is to sand compared to the lightweight stuff? I found that out the hard way on my first crack repair.

Man tell me about it. I tried sanding that 45 minute stuff on a ceiling patch and thought my arms were gonna fall off. Learned real quick to get it as smooth as possible before it sets or you're in for a workout.
