Spent $300 on a gas detector before going into the old Sunrise Pavilion mall and it probably saved my life from a carbon monoxide pocket near the food court.
Anyone else carry one or do you just rely on luck and fresh air drafts?

Okay, but if you're gonna correct someone's gas, maybe bring your own detector to the argument (just saying). That old mall air probably has a whole cocktail of "nope" brewing by the food court. Fresh air drafts are great until you're the one who finds the draft that's 90% ghost breath and asbestos. Honestly, $300 sounds cheap compared to the hospital bill for breathing in vintage mall soup.

Honestly, that's carbon dioxide, not monoxide, you'd be detecting in a place like that.

Yeah, @tarahart, you're probably right on the science there, but here's the thing - "vintage mall soup" from nina_ramirez is honestly a perfect way to put it. I've been in enough old buildings to know that even if it's just carbon dioxide building up, that still means stale air that's been breathed in and out by a thousand people before you. The real problem in those places isn't any one gas, it's the whole mix of dust, mold, and whatever else has been settling for decades. So whether it's monoxide or dioxide, your nose is gonna let you know something's off before any detector can. And yeah, $300 is a deal compared to what the hospital would charge for figuring out what's in that air.
