I finally understood why our store's return policy changed after one customer last holiday season.
We used to have a super flexible policy, basically 'if you're not happy, bring it back'. That changed to a strict 30-day window with a receipt after this one guy. He came in the week after Christmas with a receipt from two years ago for a coffee maker. It was clearly used, had coffee stains inside, and he wanted a full refund because he 'didn't like the color anymore'. My manager spent 45 minutes with him, and the guy left shouting he'd never shop here again. The next week, the new policy signs were up. It wasn't about being mean, it was about one person trying to return a used, two-year-old item for cash. That single interaction cost the store money in manager time and almost caused a scene. Has anyone else had a policy change happen because of one extreme customer?

Heard about a store that banned all returns after one person tried to return a half-eaten birthday cake.

My local hardware store did the same thing last year, @evah40, after someone returned a used lawnmower full of grass clippings.

Seen this happen way too often. You have to draw a line somewhere or people will take a mile. That guy with the coffee maker knew exactly what he was doing, trying to get free money. @evah40, a half-eaten cake is just as bad. Policies get made because a few people ruin it for everyone. It's not being mean, it's just basic business sense to stop that stuff before it starts.
