A customer tried to return a clearly used and dirty garden hose at my hardware store
This was at my job in a big hardware store in Springfield. A guy brought in a hose, still covered in mud and grass, with the box all torn up, and said it 'didn't work right.' My manager was on break, so I had to handle it. I politely told him we couldn't take back items that were used and dirty, and he got really loud, saying he bought it 'just yesterday.' I checked, and our system showed the purchase was actually 47 days ago. Has anyone else had to stand their ground on a return policy when the proof was right there?

Oof, 47 days and covered in mud? That's a big yikes from me.

Man, that sounds like a Tuesday. Good on you for checking the system. I once had a guy try to return a half-used bag of concrete mix because it "got hard." I had to just stare at him for a second. Standing your ground is the worst part of the job sometimes, especially when they get loud. You definitely did the right thing.

But honestly, if he bought it and it broke that fast, maybe the store should take it back... a hose should last more than 47 days even if it looks used. The policy seems a bit strict when the product might actually be faulty.
