Took me 3 months to find a cat coffee table book that wasn't cringey
I spent way too long hunting for a cat coffee table book that wasn't full of weird art or lazy photos. Every one I picked up had either creepy painted cats or blurry shots that looked like they were taken on a flip phone. Finally found one at a used bookstore in Denver called 'Stray Cats of Tokyo' that actually has good composition and real stories. Anyone else struggle to find a cat book that feels less like a gag gift and more like legit photography?

Totally agree, those Istanbul street cat books hit different.

I read something about how cat books with a specific focus, like street cats in a particular city, usually have better photography because they are actually telling a story. The random compilation books always feel like they were thrown together in an afternoon. I saw a similar book about the street cats of Rome once, and it was the same deal with good composition and real character in the cats.

Oh man, I feel this hard. I swear half the cat books out there are just straight up weird or way too tryhard. I picked one up once that had cats dressed in Victorian clothes and I just put it right back down. The struggle is real when you just want nice pictures of cats doing cat things without the extra fluff. I ended up grabbing one about street cats in Istanbul that kinda saved me. It had that same documentary feel you're talking about. Good find with that Tokyo one, I might have to check for a copy myself.
