Oh man, I totally used to think it was just them seeing bugs or something, but @beth_sanchez's story about Gus chattering at a blank wall really creeped me out and changed my mind. Now I'm half convinced they're tuned into something we just can't see.
Honestly, that's pretty normal cat behavior. They can see and hear things we just can't. Check for tiny insects, a stray sunbeam, or even a draft from a vent. Sometimes a new smell from outside will catch their attention. As long as Mochi is eating and acting fine otherwise, it's likely just her being a cat. My old boy did this for years, usually at a spot where a mouse probably got into the wall once.
Tried putting a piece of tape on the floor near where she was staring and she snapped out of it to investigate the tape instead. @beth_sanchez, Gus chattering at a blank wall is exactly the kind of thing that made me try the tape trick
My old cat, Gus, used to do that... he'd fixate on a blank patch of wall for hours. We never saw a bug or anything, but he'd chatter his teeth like he was watching a whole movie we couldn't see. It was kind of spooky, actually.
