My sister swore by packing cubes, but my trip to Denver proved her wrong

She said they'd save space and keep things organized, but they just added bulk and made my bag a rigid brick. I ended up unpacking them into a hotel drawer and stuffing my clothes loose to fit a souvenir jacket for the flight home. Anyone have a better system that actually compresses soft items?

My trip to Seattle last year had the same problem with the regular cubes. The compression sacks for my sleeping bag are what finally worked for me.

Maybe you got the wrong kind? The compression ones with zippers you roll down are the only ones that actually save space. The regular ones just add shape and bulk like you said.
