I thought those vacuum storage bags were a gimmick until my trip to Chicago
Honestly, I spent about $25 on a set of those travel vacuum bags with the hand pump. I was going to Chicago for a week in January and needed a big puffer coat. I rolled the coat into a medium bag, pumped the air out, and it shrank down flat. It fit right in my carry-on with everything else, and I had so much more room. Has anyone else tried these for bulky winter clothes?

My aunt in Minnesota swears by them for storing off-season quilts, which is a smart use @taragrant didn't mention. The trick is to not overfill the bag before you seal it, or the seams can split. I learned that the hard way with a giant duvet.
