My buddy in Denver said 'a good sleeping bag is all you need, pads are a scam'. Spent a cold night on a 35-degree trip and I'm not so sure.

Oh man, tell me about it... I learned that lesson the hard way too. My back was freezing even with a warm bag because the ground just sucks all the heat right out of you. That buddy is giving some seriously bad advice. A pad isn't just extra fluff, it's a basic barrier from the cold dirt. I'd never skip one again after a night like that.

What kind of pad did you end up getting after that cold night? I started with a basic foam one but switched to an inflatable for more cushion on rocky spots. Some of those thin foam pads just don't cut it when the ground is really frozen.

Learned that same lesson on a gravel campsite in Vermont, couldnt believe how stiff I felt the next morning.
