I called those $40 cable testers a gimmick for years, but one saved a whole day's work on a retrofit in Boise.
It pinpointed a break in a buried line under a concrete slab that my tone and probe couldn't find. Anyone have a different tool they swear by for that kind of ghost signal problem?

What about a good old time domain reflectometer?

Yeah, a TDR is the right tool for that. Just be ready for some weird impedance readings if the cable run is old.
