Comparing my $60 grocery haul to my friend's $60 haul was eye opening
I compared my haul of canned beans, rice, and frozen veggies to my buddy's haul of pre-made sauce packets and instant rice bowls and the difference in meals was like 8 dinners versus maybe 3. Anyone else notice how much more you get from whole ingredients even if the prep takes a bit longer?

I had a buddy who swore by those meal kit delivery boxes until he looked at what he was actually getting for the money... he told me he could make three full casseroles for what one box cost him. He started buying just the main ingredients himself and now swears he'll never go back to that pre-portioned stuff.

Yeah I gotta disagree with you here @thea692. I mean your buddy's math might be right if he's cooking for an army but that's not really what those boxes are for. They're for people like me who were throwing away half a head of cabbage or a whole bunch of cilantro every week because I couldn't use it all before it went bad. The pre-portioned stuff actually saves me money when I factor in how much less food I waste. Plus I don't have to stand in the store aisle trying to remember if I need ginger or not. If you're the kind of person who can plan three casseroles ahead and use every last carrot then yeah you're fine without them. But some of us need the hand holding.

Honestly, I feel you on the food waste thing. I used to throw out so many random veggies until I started buying just the loose stuff at the store and freezing what I didn't use, like ginger and herbs. It took a little trial and error but now I save cash and don't get stuck with extra stuff.
