My $5 thrift store jacket completely melted under a heat gun

Was trying to shape some EVA foam armor pieces last Tuesday, set the heat gun on low and held it maybe 15 seconds too long. The whole shoulder seam just bubbled and fused into a plastic mess. What's a safer way to shape foam without wrecking the base clothes?

Honestly I used to just blast foam with direct heat too. A cheap hairdryer on low held further away gives you way more control without the melt risk. Takes a bit longer but saves the jacket.

Way fewer close calls" is the dream, man. Been there with the melted foam, it's the worst.

Yeah I always went straight for the heat gun too lol. But @jamesrivera is right, the hairdryer trick is way safer for the foam. I tried it last time and had way fewer close calls.
