Found a goldmine of cheap cosplay parts at a local thrift store in Springfield
I was at the Goodwill on Main Street yesterday, just looking for some regular clothes, when I walked past the housewares section. I saw this weird plastic vase that was shaped exactly like the shoulder armor for a character I've been wanting to do (it's a knight from a video game). It was only $2.50, and it got me looking at everything with new eyes. I spent maybe an hour there, and I found a belt that could be a sword harness, a weird curtain tassel for a fancy trim, and a metal bowl that I can cut and paint into a chest plate. I spent under $15 total. It's crazy how much stuff is just sitting there waiting to be turned into something else, you know? Has anyone else had a moment like that, where you see a normal object and your brain just goes 'that's a cosplay piece'?

Your brain just starts scanning for shapes and textures instead of what the thing actually is." That's a pretty good way to put it. But let me ask you this - do you ever catch yourself doing it with things you'd never actually use? Like, I was at a restaurant the other day and saw those little plastic baskets they put fries in, and my first thought was it'd make a good helmet visor. I don't even eat fries that often. I had to stop myself from asking the waitress if I could buy one. It's like the habit gets so strong it starts working on junk you'd never actually turn into anything.

You know, I wouldn't call it seeing the world differently, that makes it sound like some special gift. It's more like a habit you get into after doing this stuff for a while. Your brain just starts scanning for shapes and textures instead of what the thing actually is. That metal bowl as a chest plate is a perfect example, I've done that exact thing with a salad bowl before.
