A detail from 'The Great Gatsby' I always got wrong
In my book club last week, we were talking about the green light in 'The Great Gatsby'. I always thought it was just a symbol for Daisy. But another member, Sarah, pointed me to a footnote in her copy that said Fitzgerald based it on a real light at the end of a dock in Great Neck, New York. She read the exact line from a letter he wrote, which said he watched it 'on many confused nights.' That small fact made the symbol feel so much more real and sad to me. Has anyone else had a book detail explained by a simple footnote?

That footnote about the real dock light is so interesting. Honestly, it makes me wonder how many other symbols in famous books are based on specific, real things the author saw. Like, was the valley of ashes in Gatsby also a real place Fitzgerald passed on the train? I'd love to know if your book club found any other footnotes like that in different books.

Oh man, I wish our club dug that deep into footnotes!
