Finally got a sharp action shot of my dog after 2 years of trying
I've been trying to photograph my golden retriever Max running at the dog park near my house in Austin since I got him as a puppy. Last week I finally got one where his face isn't a blurry mess, I used a faster shutter speed of 1/1000 and pre-focused on a spot where he usually runs. It's not perfect but it's way better than anything I've managed before. Any tips for getting the eyes in focus when they're moving that fast?

Try shooting in burst mode right as they're about to turn a corner or stop suddenly. Dogs tend to slow down a split second before changing direction, and that's when their face is sharpest. I've had way more luck catching the eyes by letting the camera do the rapid fire work instead of trying to time it perfectly myself. Also, if your camera has eye detection for animals, turn that on. It's not perfect for super fast dogs but it helps a ton with locking onto the face instead of the body. Max's blurry face phase is totally relatable, every dog owner goes through it.

Totally agree with @riverknight on the burst mode thing (it's a lifesaver). I had the exact same struggle with my corgi, and switching to continuous shooting was the only way I finally got a decent shot of his goofy face mid-run.
