PSA: do not fall for the "author signed" listing on eBay

I dropped $85 on a hardcover of some obscure horror novel cause the listing said the author signed it on the title page. Got it in the mail last week and it's just a printed facsimile signature, not even a pen mark. Anyone else get ripped off by those fake signed copy listings on secondhand sites?

Used to think people were just overreacting about fake signed books online but now I totally get it. Bought a "signed" Stephen King once and the signature looked way too clean, took me a while to realize it was just printed on there. Lesson learned the hard way like you, never trusting those listings again without asking for a closeup photo of the actual pen marks first.

Oh man, "too clean" is exactly the problem I had with a supposed signed Vonnegut, the pen marks were so perfect it looked like a machine did it - @amymiller you're right, closeup photos are the only way to tell the difference these days.
