Hot take: The ending of 'The Giver' actually made sense to me

I keep hearing people say the ending of 'The Giver' is too vague and leaves you hanging. But I read it last year on a rainy Tuesday and thought the sled ride down the hill was a clear metaphor for dying. Jonas didn't survive, and that's the point. The ambiguity is what makes you think about what real freedom costs. Has anyone else read it that way or am I totally off base?

Honestly I think you're reading way too deep into a kids book. lol It's not that serious. The author literally said the ending was meant to be open to interpretation and the sled thing is just one of like a million theories people have. I remember reading it in middle school and just thought it was a weird way to end a book. Like wow a sled hill so deep. Not everything needs to be some big symbolic death metaphor. Sometimes a vague ending is just a lazy ending.
