Spent $200 on those fancy DNA test kits and got nothing but stress
I thought finding my birth mom would be easy with AncestryDNA but it just connected me to a bunch of distant cousins who didn't know anything. Ended up wasting 8 months chasing dead ends and crying over spreadsheets. Anyone else throw money at these things and regret it?

Honestly I used to think those kits were a no-brainer way to find family but this post made me reconsider. My cousin did one and just got a bunch of vague matches that led nowhere, which sounds exactly like what you went through. Kind of eye-opening how much money and hope gets poured into them with no guarantee of real answers.

The real issue isn't the test itself but how these companies sell you a fantasy. AncestryDNA and 23andMe market themselves like magic family finders but their databases are full of people who just want to know their ethnicity breakdown, not adoptions or long-lost parents. A buddy of mine spent 6 months messaging matches who never even logged back in after the first week. These platforms need to be way more upfront about how unlikely it is that you'll actually connect with close relatives, not just show you a few 4th cousins and call it a win.
