Trust me, I learned that lesson the hard way on a different trail.

My buddy tried to cut the switchbacks on a steep section of the Old Rag trail. He ended up kicking loose a bunch of rocks and sliding about ten feet before catching a tree. It took us twice as long to get him back on the actual path, and his legs were all scratched up. Now I just stick to the trail even when it looks longer. The extra time is worth not getting hurt.

But sometimes the trail is just so boring, you know? Gotta mix it up a little, keeps things fun. What's the worst that could happen?
