Talking to a firefighter in Spokane about smoke detector placement

I was doing a job in Spokane and got chatting with a firefighter who was next door. He said they see a lot of systems where the smoke detectors are placed too close to the kitchen or bathroom vents... basically anywhere steam or normal cooking smoke can set them off. He told me to always check for air currents and put them at least 10 feet from those spots. I've been following that rule for a month now and haven't had a single false alarm callback. Anyone else have a good rule of thumb for avoiding nuisance alarms?

Ever find one right over a floor vent?

Oh, that's the worst. I had to use a butter knife to slide under it and pry carefully. Took forever, but it came up clean.
