Heard a guy at a swap meet swear by using a pencil for trace repair

I figured it was total nonsense, but a desperate fix on a vintage radio with a lifted trace proved it works in a pinch. The graphite from a standard #2 pencil can bridge a very fine break if you don't have conductive paint handy. Has anyone else actually had success with this, or did I just get lucky that one time?
