I just tell people mine is a glorified to-do list. The messy ones work the best anyway.

That tape measure trick @the_ben mentioned is a lifesaver. My uncle built a deck and took a million photos, but none showed how far the posts were from the house. He spent a whole weekend re-measuring everything from scratch.
