Hot take: graphic novels and dense histories pair better than two novels ever will
I spent about 9 months slogging through a 700 page biography of Winston Churchill and nearly quit three times. Then someone handed me a graphic memoir called Persepolis and suddenly the history clicked way harder than the big book ever did. The visual shorthand in the comic made me see the political mess in a way paragraphs couldn't. Since then I've paired every dense history with a comic version of the same era, like Maus with a Holocaust textbook. It took me way too long, like 4 years of reading, to figure this out. Anyone else find that pairing a heavy nonfiction with a graphic novel cuts the reading time in half?

God, I felt this in my bones, that whole slogging through a giant biography thing. It took me two tries to get through a book about the Russian Revolution, but then I read this comic called Red Rosa about Rosa Luxemburg and suddenly the whole mess of early 20th century politics made sense. Pairing the visual story with the dense text just makes the facts stick in your head instead of floating away.
