The part where you said "the free comic saved it" is what got me thinking. Nobody's mentioned that those mystery boxes are probably designed to make you feel like you got something even when you didn't hit the main item. That comic isn't just a nice bonus, it's a psychological trick to keep you from feeling ripped off and coming back for another box. I've seen this pattern with collectible blind bags in other fandoms too. Once you notice that the filler items are always there for a reason, you start questioning the whole odds game. You basically paid for that comic and the disappointment, not the chance at pokemon cards.
