Saw a neat trick for sight alignment at the range in Bend
Was at the Central Oregon Shooting Sports range last weekend and watched a guy use a piece of clear plastic tubing as a bore sight. He'd slide it over the barrel, look down it from the breech, and line up the target through the tube before even touching his scope... it was way faster than my usual laser method. He said he got the idea from an old army manual. Has anyone else tried something like that for a quick rough-in?

Is that even safe to look down the barrel from the breech?

Remember how nervous rodriguez.cora sounds? My buddy was the same. He had a new rifle and the sights were way off. Watched a video on the breech look method. He triple checked the gun was empty, action locked open, and did it. Took him two minutes to get a rough center. Saved him a ton of ammo at the range. It feels wrong until you understand the gun is totally safe when cleared and open.

Yeah, the "old army manual" trick is legit. I used to think it was a bit sketchy too, like rodriguez.cora said, until I saw a range safety officer do it with the action open and a cleared gun. It's just for that initial rough sight picture. You still have to do the real zeroing with live fire, but it gets you on paper way faster. That plastic tube trick is basically a poor man's collimator.
