TIL my old rock hammer was slowing me down compared to a proper geologist's pick. The pick's pointed tip is way better for splitting shale.

It's a classic case of using the right tool for the job. A rock hammer is fine for general bashing, but that pick tip gives you a clean line of force to pry layers apart. The difference in control is huge when you're working with foliated rock.
