The great client choice of 2023: a steady, boring gig or a fun, risky one

A client offered me a year-long contract writing dry manuals for $45,000, while another wanted me to write a single, weird comic book for a startup for $5,000. I picked the comic book because it sounded more fun. The startup ran out of money after two months and I got paid $800. Has anyone else ever regretted picking the interesting project over the safe one?

Your life is now a lesson for business students. Next time, maybe pick the boring money over the fun story you can tell your landlord when you're late on rent.

Ever notice how the "fun" option always seems to involve a check that bounces? You traded a year of boring but paid lunches for a story about how you got paid in leftover company t-shirts and a vague promise. My advice? Next time, take the boring money and use it to buy your OWN weird comic books.

Fun doesn't pay the bills though.
