PSA: a client meeting in a Chicago coffee shop made me double my rates overnight

I was showing a design mockup on my laptop when the guy at the next table offered me $500 on the spot to do the same for his business, which made me realize I was charging way too little for my actual clients.

That moment in a Chicago coffee shop must have been a real eye-opener. Good on you for realizing your worth and adjusting your rates.

Honestly, my friend had a similar thing happen at a diner last year. She overheard the people at the next booth talking about paying a freelancer triple her rate for worse work. Ngl, it was like a lightbulb went off for her right there over some pancakes. She basically doubled her prices that week and got more serious clients, which is kinda what you're saying, @richardmurray. Tbh, sometimes you just need that random moment to see what your skills are really worth to other people.

Totally get what you're saying, @richardmurray. My buddy had this happen while waiting for a haircut. He was just sitting there and the guy in the next chair was bragging about this huge project budget to his barber. My friend did the exact same kind of work and was charging way, way less. He went home, redid his whole pricing page that night, and honestly, it changed everything for him. It's crazy how you can be in your own bubble until some random conversation just snaps you out of it.
