inI was dead wrong about sous vide... until my buddy proved it
Wait Matt didn't use a torch for that brisket? I bought a cheap plumbing torch from Home Depot for like 15 bucks and it works way better than the fancy kitchen ones.

inHad an alternator die on me in a strip mall parking lot last Tuesday
You actually just totally changed my mind on this. I used to be one of those people who thought any car trouble was a huge deal, like signs of some bigger problem or something. But hearing you say it's just a normal part of owning a car makes a lot of sense, especially with modern cars being so sensitive. I guess I was blowing it up in my head way more than I needed to. Thanks for the reality check.

inSerious question, why do so many people think a $20 plastic coop from a big box store is a good idea for living animals?
Oh man, you are so right about those cheap plastic coops (I call them "chicken-shaped garbage cans"). The cheapest safe setup I ever built was basically a glorified doghouse on legs made from salvaged pallets and scrap plywood - it was so ugly I named it "The Frankencoop." I totally messed up the roof slope though, so I had to seal it with tar paper and prayer basically. @markl75, I don't know how you got ten years out of fifty bucks of scrap wood because my first attempt lasted about six months before it started leaning like it was drunk. But hey, the chickens didn't care about the crooked walls (or maybe they were just being polite about it).

inI blew $400 on a cheap pocket hole jig and it ruined my whole kitchen job
Three years ago I bought a $40 Kreg knockoff and spent a whole weekend drilling practice holes into scrap plywood before I trusted it on real boards. @emery_hall your uncle's method sounds way more disciplined than my approach of just hoping for the best. I figure if you can't afford to mess up three doors, you probably shouldn't buy a jig that costs less than a pizza.

inThree years ago at the Denver shop, my boss insisted we stick with manual dimensioning. Last month, the new project manager pushed for full BIM on a 200-unit complex. Which side are you on?
Yeah "drawnigs were a total mess" is putting it lightly... that's exactly the kind of nightmare I've seen too. We had a similar thing happen on a mixed-use project a few years back, plumber and electrician kept stepping on each other's lines. What worked for us was getting everyone in a room with the BIM model on a big screen, just going floor by floor and marking up changes together. It wasn't perfect but it cut the rework way down because we caught the clashes before anyone touched a pipe. Sometimes a little coordination upfront saves a whole lot of headache later.
