My great-grandma's 'secret' fruitcake recipe called for a jar of maraschino cherries and I spent $18 on fancy ones.
Turns out she just used the cheap bright red ones from the grocery store, not the imported Italian kind I hunted down. I felt pretty silly standing there with my expensive jar while my mom laughed. Anyone have a family recipe that sent you on a wild goose chase for an ingredient?

Ugh, that's the worst! My aunt's "special" chili recipe said to get "real cheddar." I went to three stores for some fancy aged block. She meant the pre-shredded bagged kind she always buys. I spent like an hour grating cheese for nothing. Those family recipe notes are never specific enough.

Yeah, "family recipe notes" are like that. It's the same with people giving directions without street names.

Wait, but @allen.ruby, that vagueness is the whole point!
