My uncle, who's been laying floors for 40 years, told me to always start hardwood in the middle of the room.

He said it's the only way to keep the boards straight, especially in old houses. But my crew lead swears by starting from the longest wall and working out. We argued about it for like 20 minutes after a job in Springfield last week. Which method do you guys actually use and why?

Start in the middle for old houses, but use the wall method for modern square rooms.

Honestly @lane.kim that's the best advice right there. Tried starting in the middle of my modern living room once and it was a total mess. Walls were all wonky and nothing lined up. The wall method just saves so much time and headache in newer places. Ngl, learned that lesson the hard way after wasting a whole Saturday.

Yeah and that's the thing, @lane.kim is right but it's bigger than floors. So many old ways of doing things just don't fit new stuff. It's like trying to use a paper map in a new town vs an old one. The old rules were made for different problems.
