That $12 tub of spackle from the hardware store fixed my wall holes way better than the expensive tube I used before
After patching three nail holes in my living room last weekend, the cheap stuff dried smooth with one pass while the $8 tube crumbled on me has anyone else found the basic powder mix works better than the premixed stuff?

Hold on, are we talking about the same cheap stuff? I swear every time I've tried the powder mix it ends up cracking or taking forever to sand smooth, especially on bigger holes. The premixed stuff from the store, even the super cheap one, has never let me down, it just dries way too fast sometimes if you aren't quick enough. Maybe you got a bad batch or your wall texture is different from mine, because the powder has always been a nightmare for me.
