Finally got the drape right on a linen shift dress after three muslin tries
The first version hung like a sack, honestly. I spent a Saturday cutting a new muslin with a 15% bias adjustment on the side panels, based on a tip from a book I found at the library. After a second test, I added a tiny bit of weight to the hem facing, maybe an ounce total. The third try finally moved the way I pictured, flowing instead of just falling. Has anyone else found that small weight changes make a big difference with natural fibers?

Oh man, my friend did something like that with a silk skirt. She sewed some tiny washers into the hem and it went from frumpy to fancy just like that.

That hem weight trick is a game changer. It's like the difference between a curtain and a proper garment.

But doesn't that extra weight make the fabric hang kinda stiff? I like a bit more natural movement in my clothes, even if the hem isn't perfect. Guess it just depends on the look you want.
