Soldering iron comparison: Weller vs Hakko in my shop over 2 years

I ran a Weller WES51 for years and thought it was fine until I borrowed a Hakko FX-888D from a friend last spring. After two months of repair work on circuit boards, the Hakko's temperature recovery was noticeably faster on ground planes. Has anyone else switched stations and found a clear winner for their daily work?

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is how the Weller handles being left on overnight. I've done it plenty of times and it still works fine the next day. But the Hakko, if you leave it on for more than a few hours, the standby mode kicks in and the tip seems to oxidize faster when it comes back up. I had to replace my Hakko tip after about 8 months of daily use because I kept forgetting to turn it off at the end of the day. The Weller tips lasted me over a year with the same habit. So the recovery is better on Hakko, but the durability might be worse if you're forgetful like me.

Wait, you were like me and thought the Weller was the gold standard for years? Same here man. I had my WES51 for forever and swore by it until I grabbed a Hakko FX-888D on a whim when my old iron finally died. Night and day difference on heavy boards. That temp recovery you mentioned is no joke - the Hakko keeps its heat way better when you're soldering big ground planes or thick wires. I actually felt kinda dumb for being stubborn about the Weller for so long. The tip selection is better too, way more options for fine pitch work without having to hunt down discontinued stuff. I still keep the Weller around as a backup but it hasn't left the shelf since I switched.
