The drain in my basement shower backed up at 6am yesterday
Woke up to standing water because the hair catcher I bought from Canadian Tire last year finally gave up. Had to snake it myself before work with a $15 drain tool from Home Hardware. Anyone else deal with old plumbing in these 80s era homes?

Close but it's not really the hair catcher that gave up... those plastic hair catchers from Canadian Tire are meant to be cleaned out every few months, not left in for a year. The standing water probably happened because the gunk built up behind it and pushed right past the screen. I had the same thing happen to me and learned the hard way that those things are more like a temporary bandaid than a permanent fix. You gotta pull it out and scrape the slime off regularly or it just becomes a dam that water flows over. Snaking it yourself was the right call though, those $15 drain tools work way better than people give them credit for.

@blakem82 isn't it more about the pipe trap getting clogged further down though?

I learned that lesson after my shower drain became a science experiment.
