My dad called me out on my 'dump everything in' habit last week

I was bragging to my dad about my 3-ingredient chicken tacos and he just goes 'but do they actually taste like anything?' and honestly that hit me hard. I've been tossing frozen chicken breasts with a jar of salsa and calling it dinner for months. Now I'm actually browning the meat first and adding some cumin and garlic. Has anyone else had to level up their slow cooker game after a reality check like that?

lindagreen's tip about deglazing is legit, that one step took my chicken from cardboard to actually decent. Same thing happened with me when my brother tried my "chili" and asked where the cumin was lmao. Browning the meat and layering spices halfway through cooking made a world of difference for me too, especially with tougher cuts like chuck roast.

Oh man, that hit close to home. My sister straight up told me my "dump chicken" was bland and I was so mad but she was right. Biggest thing that changed my game was browning the meat first, you're already on that. Also try layering your spices in stages, not just dumping it all at once. A little smoked paprika and chili powder goes a long way. And here's the real magic trick: deglaze the pan after browning with a splash of broth or even water, scrape up all those browned bits, and pour that into the slow cooker. That's where the actual flavor lives. You can still be lazy with the prep but that one step makes it taste like you actually tried.
