Hot take: I keep seeing new guys skip the pre-fill step on tapered joints.
Heard a guy at the supply house in Tacoma say he just tapes right over them to save time. That's a call-back waiting to happen. Anyone else notice corners cracking faster when you skip that step?

Man, that's wild. I saw a guy skip the pre-fill once and his whole joint split after the first winter. It just doesn't seem worth the risk to save a few minutes.

Yeah, I read a whole thing about how that gap lets moisture get in and freeze. It's not just about the cold making things shrink, it's the water expanding when it turns to ice. That pressure has to go somewhere, so it cracks the material from the inside out. Skipping the pre-fill is basically leaving a tiny trap for water. A few minutes of work now saves you a huge repair bill later. It's one of those things that seems small but has big consequences.
