Talked to my neighbor about his sump pump and it clicked
He told me he tests his sump pump every spring by pouring a 5-gallon bucket of water into the pit. I never even thought to check mine until it was too late last August. Do you guys actually run maintenance on yours or just hope for the best?

Pour water down it now to see if it even kicks on still?

Pouring 5 gallons of water down there to see if it works feels like overkill to me... I mean, unless you live in a swamp, how often does your sump pump actually get tested by real weather? @dakota479 I get the logic but maybe just listen for it during a good storm instead of lugging buckets around. I've had mine for 8 years and never once checked it, never had a problem either. People treat these things like they're going to flood the house if you look at them wrong. Half the time the pump kicks on from just a little bit of groundwater anyway. Just my two cents but I think folks make this more complicated than it needs to be.
