Yeah, the part about engine noise seeming normal hits home. I was the same way in my younger years, convinced my ears were just tough. Turns out my ears were just quietly plotting their revenge with that permanent ring. It took a solid decade of that high pitched whine to finally beat the stubbornness out of me. Now I feel naked without my plugs, like I finally started listening to the little voice that was screaming the whole time.
