Had a 6.7 Powerstroke's high pressure fuel pump grenade on me last Thursday, sent metal through the whole system.
It was on a 2017 F-250 that came in running rough. The customer said it just lost power on the highway. Pulled the fuel filter and found glitter. Tore into it and the CP4 pump was toast. Now we're looking at replacing the pump, lines, rails, and injectors. Quote is over $8k in parts alone. Has anyone found a decent aftermarket kit for this, or is it just a bite-the-bullet OEM situation every time?

Man, that glitter in the filter is the worst sight. Has the customer mentioned if they ever used any fuel additives or maybe got a bad tank of fuel? I've heard a lot of theories that the ultra low sulfur diesel doesn't lubricate those CP4 pumps enough, and a little bit of bad fuel or water can just wipe them out. It's a brutal fix no matter what, but if they didn't use additives, that might be something to tell them for the next pump. Honestly, after seeing a few of these, I'd be looking real hard at a conversion kit to the older CP3 pump if that's even possible for that year, just for some peace of mind.

Wait, you can actually convert a CP4 to a CP3? @valgibson that's wild, I had no idea that was even an option. I've just been telling people to pray and use additives. Saw a truck last year where the pump went and it took the whole fuel system with it, injectors and everything. That bill was more than my first car. If a swap kit exists, that changes everything for those engines.
