Bought a cheap timing light from Harbor Freight and it threw my readings off by 6 degrees on a Cummins ISX

After chasing a power loss for two weeks that cost me $400 in parts, I finally borrowed a Snap-On light from a buddy and found the timing was actually perfect the whole time, has anyone else run into accuracy problems with budget timing lights?

Had a buddy with an old Ford 7.3 swear his Harbor Freight light was acting up on him too. He replaced a perfectly good crank sensor because of it.

Ha, yeah I used to think those cheap lights were fine too. But @grant.margaret your story about the crank sensor really got me thinking. I had a similar thing with a no-name LED shop light I picked up, it kept flickering and I swore it was messing with my truck's idle. Finally tossed it and grabbed a name brand one, and that fixed everything. Makes you wonder how many parts get swapped for no reason because of a crappy light lol.
