A delayed timing gear job taught me about planning
Had to replace timing gears on an old diesel engine. The alignment took twice as long as the manual said, pushing us past the estimate. What tricks do you use to speed up precise jobs?

Honestly though, is it even that big a deal if it runs over time? Tbh, rushing a precise job like that seems like a great way to mess it up and have to do it twice. The manual gives you a perfect world guess, but we don't live there. Sometimes the job just takes as long as it takes.

Seriously, is it that bad? In my world, stuff always takes longer than the guide says. If it runs right in the end, who cares about the clock?

Ugh, manuals are always too optimistic. I mark the old gear and shaft with paint pens before taking anything apart, gives you a solid starting point. What kind of diesel was it?
