Hit a $50 savings goal from my book budget this month
I was reading Walden and found the line about how most luxuries are just hindrances to progress. I checked my book spending spreadsheet and realized I saved $50 by borrowing from the library instead of buying new. Anyone else ever have a quote make you look at your own wallet differently?

$50 is nothing in the grand scheme of things lol. I spent $120 on books last month and every single one paid for itself in enjoyment or knowledge. That Walden quote is nice and all but Thoreau had rich friends letting him live on their land for free. Borrowing from the library means waiting weeks for popular titles and dealing with due dates. Just buy the book, support the author, and keep it on your shelf forever.

Supporting authors is fine but let's not pretend dropping $120 on books in one month is some kind of virtue. You're still the one who chose to spend that money, and it's not like authors get rich off a single sale anyway (unless you're buying from a tiny press or something). Library wait times suck for sure, but you know what also sucks? Clutter from books you read once and never touch again. I've got a shelf right now with five books I bought three years ago and still haven't cracked open.
