Found out the diner quote in "No Country for Old Men" is only 2 lines long but the movie stretches it into the whole opening
I was flipping through a used copy of No Country for Old Men at a thrift store in Boise last weekend and hit the sheriff's opening bit about how he doesn't know what to make of the young people he sees. I counted it out right there in the aisle and the whole thing is barely 2 sentences, but the Coen brothers turned it into like 4 minutes of voiceover at the start of the movie. It hit me because I always quote that speech like it's this long wise monologue and it's really just a guy mumbling on his way to work. Made me think about how much of what sticks with us is the voice, not the words. What's a quote you thought was way longer than it actually is when you went back to the page?

That whole "carry the fire" bit is way shorter on the page too.
