My old laptop took 90 seconds to boot, now it takes 12, and all I did was unplug one thing
I ran a startup timer on my work laptop at home in Boise and it sat at 91 seconds for weeks, so last Tuesday I finally opened the task list and killed a coupon app that was launching at boot and phoning home. Now it boots in 12 seconds flat and my fan stopped screaming, which means that thing was basically mining crypto on my dime. Has anyone else found a program that was quietly running at startup and hogging way more than it should?
That line about killing a coupon app at boot really hits home, because I had the same thing with some junk toolbar thing that came bundled with a PDF reader. It was set to check for updates every time I logged in and somehow ate 30 percent of my CPU, so disabling it in the startup tab cut my boot time from about 70 seconds to 15. Worth poking through that list every few months, since stuff sneaks back in with random updates.
