Appreciation post: my router died at 2am in Denver and I finally turned on the logging I'd been skipping
Two Thursdays back my home router just stopped handing out IPs around 2am in Denver, and every smart plug and camera in the house went dark at once. I plugged my laptop straight into the modem and started grabbing Wireshark captures, and what I saw was a full scan hitting every port every few minutes from a device I didn't recognize. Turns out a cheap webcam I'd bought on a whim had a default admin password and was wide open for who knows how long. I yanked it, reset the router, and now I run a separate guest network for anything I don't fully trust. Has anyone else set up a guest VLAN for their smart home junk, and did it actually keep things separate?
