I ignored that 'get 1000 true fans' email for 6 months and finally tried it

Kept seeing that 1000 true fans idea tossed around and figured it was just guru talk, but I tested it with a small paid newsletter last fall and 84 people paying $5/month beat my 3,000+ free followers for actual income. The weird part is they reply to every email like we know each other. Anyone here moved from chasing follower counts to a smaller paying group, and did the burnout get better or just different?
