Just realized my writing group in Chicago wasted two hours because I brought a prompt about a sentient toaster

I was at our usual coffee shop when the whole room went silent after I read it out, and the only feedback I got was 'maybe try something less... appliance-based' before we moved on to someone else's idea.

Seriously? A sentient toaster is a killer idea lol. Think about it, a kitchen appliance gaining consciousness and having a full existential crisis while just trying to make breakfast. That's pure gold. Some of the best stories come from taking a totally normal thing and flipping it on its head. Your group just lacked vision, man.

Remember getting the same blank stares for a story about a lonely parking meter. Switched groups and found people who actually like weird stuff. Sometimes you just need a different room, you know? That toaster idea sounds fun, and fun is the whole point of writing. Why stick with a group that makes you feel bad for having a cool, silly idea?

Chicago writing groups can be brutal, but fionaf19 is right about the idea having potential.
