Showerthought: Overheard a new guy talking about his first solo tower crane lift
I was grabbing coffee before my shift and heard a younger operator telling his buddy about lifting a 15-ton HVAC unit last week. He said his foreman just watched from the ground and didn't say a word the whole time. That quiet approval meant more than any pat on the back. It got me thinking about those first few jobs where you finally feel like you're not just moving the levers, you're really running the show. What was the first lift that made you feel like a real operator?

Honestly though, that silent treatment sounds kinda messed up. A simple "good job" costs nothing and actually helps new guys learn. Just staring feels more like a test than real trust.

Wait so whats his deal then? Does he think being harsh some how builds character or is he just lazy and doesnt want to talk? Ive seen bosses like that and its always some weird power trip nonsense. Like how hard is it to say "hey good work" or "watch that corner next time". Staring and nodding like some silent movie character is just creepy not helpful. If he really trusted the guy he would actually speak up and guide him not just watch like a hawk.

My buddy had a similar thing happen with his first big concrete pour. The old foreman just leaned on his truck and gave a single nod when it was done. He said that nod felt like getting his diploma.
