Rant: A client's super fine hair kept slipping out of every updo I tried

I had this bride in my chair last Saturday (her wedding was at the Riverside Pavilion) and her hair was like silk thread. Every pin just slid right out. Out of pure frustration, I grabbed a can of dry shampoo from my kit and sprayed it at the roots before sectioning. It gave just enough grit for the pins to grab without making her hair look dirty. She loved the final look and it held all night. Has anyone found a better trick for this kind of hair, or is dry shampoo the go-to?

My cousin with hair like that swears by a tiny bit of the old school L'Oreal Studio Line gel, like from the 90s, rubbed just on her palms and smoothed over the sections before pinning. It's basically glue but it dries clear.

Remember when hair gel was basically a construction material? Sounds like your cousin is one strong breeze away from having a helmet you could bounce a quarter off of. I can picture the whole salon smelling like that weird, sharp, chemical fruit scent from a pump bottle. Honestly, it's a miracle any of us from that era have any hair left at all. That stuff was less "styling product" and more "clear glue stick for your head.
